Social Security Number Fraud Q & A

Posted by Noah Wieder | Wednesday, August 29, 2007 | 2 comments »

We receive a lot of questions about Social Security Number Fraud which is often tied to Identity theft.

One of the most recent Questions was:

How would someone determine if a person who is currently using a valid Social Security number is actually the person the number was issued to, and is not just using a valid number in a fraudulent manner?

Say for example: Person “A” has a valid social security number and person “B” lists the number on their employment records as their social security number. Your Free SSN verification would show the number is actually valid but the number would be being used in a fraudulent manner.

Our Answer was:

Yes, a Free SSN verification would most likely show the SSN was valid. The only way to figure out if it's being used fraudulently is by conducting one of a few professional investigator assisted searches. If you are an employer checking on a current or former W-2 employee you could use the SSNVS system from the SSA.gov.

Otherwise, we would recommend one of the following four searches.

  1. A reverse SSN trace
  2. A Comprehensive Background Check by SSN
  3. An Exhaustive People Search by SSN
  4. A Financial Due Diligence Report
Any one of these investigator conducted searches often reveals all the names reporting the SSN with the address history.

The amount of information provided by these different reports vary, however most of them typically include dates the address information was reported to the various bureaus and reporting agencies.

This would give you a clue as to who actually established the SSN first. Typically the person who was issued the number first establishes it first (establishing credit, utilities, etc).

Sometimes immigrants who have established themselves (went thru the process of getting a work permit or visa) and obtained a SSN so they can work legally share the number with relatives or friends.

Sometimes a loan application is completed using a slightly different name or a variation of the name the SSN was actually issued to. Even if the loan is turned down for credit the name is actually reported in the credit bureau records. This establishes a new or additional name attached to the SSN.

It can sometimes be difficult to know who the actual number was issued too. If you are an employer as registered with the IRS and need to verify current or former employees (only for wage reporting [Form W-2] purposes) you may use the Social Security Number Verification Service (SSNVS) found on the SSA.gov web site.

If you not an employer or you are trying to verify a prospective employee or other individual (independent contractor or any other 1099 type of employee) you would need to use a third party investigation service and still need to abide by FCRA and other employment laws.

Tips & Advice on How to avoid eBay fraud

Posted by Noah Wieder | Tuesday, August 28, 2007 | 0 comments »

Are you considering buying something on eBay but afraid of getting ripped off? Well, you're not alone. There are millions of eBay users and the scammers and fraudsters abound. This simple video created by iwantcollectibles.com includes great tips and advice for beginner eBay buyers. Warnings include how and what to look for when choosing a seller on eBay.

If you’re considering a sizable purchase (a few hundred dollars or more) for collectibles or a vehicle perhaps, it’s always a great idea to do your homework (background check) and research the seller.

About 3 years ago I purchased a medium priced SUV from an eBay seller. Here are the steps I took to ensure I was dealing with a reputable seller.

  1. Reviewed all feedback from buyers

  2. Made sure seller had sold vehicles previously (or at least sold other large ticket items).

  3. If it was the sellers first vehicle (everybody has to have a first) make sure the seller had a “Me” page posted on eBay and/or listed all personal information in the auction.

  4. When you have nothing to hide and are a stand up citizen or reputable business you should be willing to have your profile be public, especially if you’re asking someone to spending $1,000 or more and you are basically doing business with strangers. [I sell things on eBay and I have an about me page. I’m easy to find and verify.]

  5. If the seller does not have any information posted on the auction about who they are, send a message to them using the eBay system.

  6. Tell the seller you are interested in the item and ask them to provide their name and contact phone number. This is a very basic request.

  7. If someone is selling a laptop or other piece of expensive equipment, or a high ticket electronic device, or a vehicle and they are not a full time eBay business they should provide their name and phone number. If they are a full time eBay business, their auction should list their business name and address or phone number.

If the auction you are interested in does not have name or contact info and you ask the seller for their name and phone (just send a simple message that says:

“Hi, I’m [insert your name] and my eBay name is [xxxx]. I am interested in bidding on your [describe item and include auction number].

Before I place a bid on such an expensive item I like to know who I am doing business with. If you would be so kind as to reply to this message with your contact information (name and phone number) I would like to speak with you for my peace of mind.

Once we speak I will feel more comfortable bidding on your item. If you prefer to call me, please do so at [add your phone number]. The best time to reach me is [enter day and time]. Sincerely, [your name].

This simple message may save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars as well as the anxiety and time of dealing with eBay fraud.

There are thousands of thousands of honest sellers on eBay, both businesses and individuals. You just have to make sure you’re dealing with one of them, because there are also thousands of scammers too.

If you do not get a response from the seller from your request, please don’t bid on that item. There are plenty of legitimate auctions and sellers that are more than happy to speak with potential customers.

Have you ever heard of a business that does not want to speak to their potential customers? Well, okay, some of our competitors don’t post phone numbers or contact info, but you probably wouldn’t want to do business with them either.

I successfully heard from the seller and he provided his name and cell phone number. Once I had his name and cell number I requested a reverse cell phone number lookup to be sure this was actually his cell number and obtained the address associated with it.

Once I had his name and address and was comfortable with the conversation we had and was pretty sure I was going to bid on the vehicle, there were a number of things I could request to put my mind at ease even more.

I actually requested a few things including a complete background check (only $67) and a Financial Due Diligence report ($57). Since he claimed to be a business, I had a Business Background Check done too. After all, a vehicle purchase can be in the tens of thousands, and I was required to send a cashiers check for the vehicle. So for less than $250 I assured my check was safe and that I was fairly confident I would get the vehicle I paid for.

This method has been successful for several of my friends, family members and other bestpeoplesearch customers who successful purchased very nice vehicles at substantial savings from eBay motors sellers.

If you've already been ripped off and have lost your money, there are way to try and track down the fraudster.

First thing is to contact the police in the town where you mailed your check (if you paid by Paypal or credit card, file a fraud report). You can also contact the secret service (they are the agency that deals with Internet fraud).

Aside from that, you can try and track down the thief yourself (try an email trace if you have an email from them), then notify the authorities that you've found the thief and need help apprehending them.

Secretly Verify if SSN is Legal

Posted by Noah Wieder | Tuesday, August 21, 2007 | 0 comments »

Recent questions from customers inquiring about our free social security number verification system.

Questions:

  1. Am I able to verify if an SSN is legal on your system and is it confidential ?
  2. Can I secretly verify if SSN is Legal ?
  3. Is your free online SSN verification search private ?
  4. Can I do a death search by social security number with your system ?
  5. Can I get a free background search by ssn ?
  6. If I use your system to search by ssn for free what info do I get ?

Answers:

  1. In short, yes you can Secretly verify if SSN is legal and it is confidential. It's not necessary to secretly verify SSN information. If you are an employer just trying to find out if someone is providing a valid SSN you can call the SSA or use our system or both. You should not rely on one system and you can not make employment decisions based on the information you receive from our web site. Employers much abide by current laws such as GLB, FCRA and any others that affect your industry. Consult an HR or legal professional for further advise.
  2. Please refer to answer 1 above.
  3. Please refer to answer 1 above.
  4. It is not necessary to conduct a separate death records search. If you use our free SSN verification system and know the SSN we will do a free death records search for you at the same time we check to see if the SSN is valid. If a death record is found we will provide the date of death or whatever if located.
  5. Um, sorry, but no. A full background check requires a professional to uncover all the necessary information. You can obtain a comprehensive background check from one of our investigators it's just not a free background search by SSN.
  6. Well, if you provide the SSN (no name or anything else), our system will check to see if the social security number is a valid number or not. If it is, the system will provide you with the state that issued that number (in the future we hope to provide an approximate year as well). Some of the responses can be "Valid" or "Active", which means the SSN has likely been issued by the state reported, and it has not been reported to the Social Security Death Index. If the SSN report comes back as "not valid" the most likely explanation is that the number you entered is not a legitimate SSN or the number has yet to be issued. If the free SSN report comes back as "NOT active" the SSN was most likely found in the Social Security Death Index and the report should include the approx date of death if available.

A Long Question: Can you please provide an explanation of how your free SSN verification works. We need to make certain that the information you provide is credible and reliable. Please provide more information about how the system works and the resources that are used to verify the information.

A Long Answer: We utilize a proprietary system using data from the ssa.gov web site as well as the social security death records index file both of which are updated monthly.

Since our Social security number verification program currently a few free searches daily you can certainly test the validity of the data easily. Simply run a bunch of SSN numbers known to be both valid and invalid. In other words, enter good numbers, invalid numbers, and deceased numbers into the free SSN verification tool.

When testing out our Free social security number verification tool please keep in mind that some deceased information takes longer than others to be reported and/or included in the the death file by the SSA.

You should also keep in mind that anytime the state increases "changes" the group number (the middle two numbers of the SSN) or when someone gets a brand new SSN it can take a anywhere from 45 days to a few months for the system to recognize the number as valid.

Also, if there is a group number that does not get issued or changed often for some reason there are not many births or SSN numbers issued in a certain sequence a relatively new number may not produce an "Active" response by the system.

It's important to realize and understand that every system is going to have some discrepancies as no one can guarantee 100% accuracy but we've processed well over 1,000,000 free SSN verifications since we started offering the service and can honestly say our system offers well over a 99% accuracy rate. We think that's a pretty darn good track record. We hope you give it a try.

If you need more than a few free SSNs verified each day we offer a simple online solution using this link for less than $0.25 each.

If you only need to verify a few a day (we are offering 10 free a day as of this writing) you can simply use our free SSN verification tool.

Trace an Email Address - Reverse Email Lookup

Posted by Noah Wieder | Tuesday, August 21, 2007 | 0 comments »

Have you ever received an email from someone and really wanted to know sent it. I'm not talking about finding out who sends you spam or junk mail. I'm talking about a harrassing, threatening, or suspicious email; or maybe even an email you found on your spouses computer (you know, the one he or she didn't want you to read).

Until now there really wasn't an effective method for identifing the individuals behind these email addresses. Bestpeoplesearch.com recently finalized an agreement with an expert in email route tracing. These experts have a lot of experience, an excellent track record, and a good success rate. Of course it's not a 100% full proof method, but they offer a pretty darn good guarantee if they can't locate any information.

No one can guarantee a full name and address for every email address in the world, but our new reverse email lookup is the next best thing. If you want to know how to help a friend with a cheating spouse or have access to emails you want traced, this is the search that will help answer that "who is send this email" question.

All you need is the "target" email address (the email address you are seeking the information about) and one of the email headers. If you don't know how to obtain the email headers please read my last blog article "how to find email headers".

There are several methods you can use to do this yourself but you will need a few things.

  1. A heck of a lot of time.
  2. Lots of patience (don't mind the frustration trying to sort through all the email header information).
  3. Software to locate the ISP of the sender
  4. The ability to further the investigation to obtain the subject's name and address.

If you do figure out how to successfully locate the name and address of an email sender, we would appreciate your comments in this blog. It will inevitably help others save time, frustration, money, and hopefully send a message to harrassing email senders that they can be found.

How to View Email Headers

Posted by Noah Wieder | Sunday, August 19, 2007 | 1 comments »

View, Copy and Paste Email Headers
for Email Trace

If you want to conduct a reverse email lookup search or trace an email address to locate the name and address of the person that sent it, you will need to be able to provide the full email header and the email address.

The instructions below should help you view and copy (extract) headers from many of the popular email programs. Once you are able to view and copy the full email header you can paste them into any online form or document you want.

Hotmail:
Log into Hotmail.
Click on "Options" tab on the top navigation bar.
Click on the "Mail" link on the navigation bar on the left.
Click on the "Mail Display Settings" link.
Change the "Message Headers" option to "Full".
Click the "OK" button.

Yahoo Mail:
Log into your Yahoo! Mail account.
Click the "Options" link on the navigation bar.
Click the "General Preferences" link.
Go to the paragraph titled Messages and Locate the Show Headers heading and select "All."
Click the "Save" button to put your new settings into effect.

Once this setting is saved, go back and open your email and you should view the headers.

AOL Mail:
If the email is sent from anywhere OTHER then AOL, and you are receiving it in AOL, then open the email you want to trace, or have your client open the email, and look for the link Details. This link is usually just below the To:email in the email message. If the email is sent from an AOL user to another AOL user then our Reverse AOL Screenname search can get you the sender's information.

Gmail:
Log into your Gmail Account
Open the Email whose headers you want to view
Click on the more options link in the message next to the date of the email.
If the link says hide options then do not worry you have already clicked on the more options link.
Now click the link called show original.
This will bring up a new window with headers and the body of the message.

Thunderbird (Firefox - Mozilla):
To view email headers
Go to "View"
Then go to Headers

Highlight, copy, and paste everything from this window (Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C)

NOTE: With Viruses, Worms and Trojans being spread via email, many users now work with the preview screen in Outlook Express turned off. Viewing email in the preview screen is no different than opening the message. If the email has malicious content, it may execute in the preview screen.

Old versions: Click on the "View" menu, then "Headers," then "All."
Note: This method will not work correctly with HTML.

Eudora:
Note: Using the cut and paste to the web form method is the only option available to Eudora users.

Eudora for the Mac:
Open the email and click the button on the upper left hand corner of the message.
This shows the extended headers. Select the whole message including headers and paste.

Eudora for the PC:
There are 2 slightly different methods depending on whether the mail contains HTML or not.

To prepare for HTML email you should turn off the use of Microsoft's HTML viewer.
Click Tools, then Options, then Viewing Mail.
Uncheck the box labeled "Use Microsoft's viewer."

How to know if it's HTML mail:
Open the email and look near the bottom of the headers (see below for revealing headers) for a line like the following:
Content-Type: text/html
You can frequently spot HTML email because it does not look like plain text. It usually has some font effects (like bold or underlines), some graphics or pictures. It’s not always true so you have to take a quick look at the headers.

Eudora for the PC - non-HTML mail:
Double click on the subject line to open the email.
Click the button to reveal the headers.
Place your cursor anywhere in the body of the email and select the entire message (Edit/Select All or Ctrl-A)
Copy the entire email (right click and click copy OR Ctrl/C OR Edit/Copy)
Paste (right click/paste or Ctrl/V).

Eudora for the PC - HTML mail:
Open the email and click the button to reveal the headers.
Highlight the headers only. Copy and paste the headers.
Hit enter twice after the pasted headers to force a blank line after the headers.
Back in Eudora window, place your cursor anywhere in the body of the message and right click and click "view source". A new window will open.
In the new window, select all (as above) and copy the contents of the new window.
Ready to Paste

Pine:
If the feature is enabled, you simply press "H" to toggle full headers. If the feature is not enabled, you must enable it first: From the main menu, press (S)etup, (C)onfig. Scroll down about 40 lines to the option labeled "enable-full-header-cmd." Press [ENTER]. Press (E)xit, (Y)es - to save. Then you can return to the message window and use "H" to display the headers.

Lotus Notes (v.4.x and v.5.x):
Open the email, click on "Actions" then on "Delivery Information."
Now you have to pick out the internet-style mail header information from the window that appears when you select Delivery Information.

Lotus Notes v.4.x:
Look for the first line that begins with "Received". There should be a blank line just above it. Then, scroll down to the next blank line. The stuff in-between the two blank lines are the headers you need.

Lotus Notes v.5.x:
Look for the separator line that reads
-------- Additional Header ------.
Select everything from there down to the next separator line, usually
-------- Routing Information ------
The stuff in between the two separator lines are the headers you need.

Lotus Notes v.5.x (easier method):
Open your inbox
Highlight the message that you wish to get header information for.
Choose File -> Export...
Type in a filename, leave the type as "Structured Text" and click Export
From the Dialog Box that comes up, choose "Selected Documents" and click OK
Now you can open that message you saved in WordPad and Cut and Paste it.

Pegasus Mail:
In the New Mail or other folder window:

Right click the message, and select Message Properties.
In the right hand column uncheck the box beside Contains HTML data.
Click OK. That should allow you to see the message as a text message only.
Click Ctrl-H to bring up the full headers.
Another way:

Highlight the HTML in the new mail folder
Open a new email message
Drag the HTML onto the new message
In the dialog that appears select "Show All Headers"
Highlight the entire message and then copy to clipboard
Ready to Paste

Claris Emailer - Version 2.0 and higher:
Use the "Show Long Headers" option in the "Mail" menu while you have the message open.

Claris Emailer - Versions earlier than 2.0:
Click the blue triangle near the "from" information to show additional message information, then click the "Show Original Headers..." button to bring up the full header info.

kmail (KDE Desktop):
In the KDE Mail Client that comes with the KDE desktop for Linux, select Message, View Source. Copy and paste the text from the "Message as Plain Text" window.

To get full "message source"

When viewing the message, click File, then Save Message As.
A standard save window will appear.
Save the message as a .txt file (document.txt).
Open the file you created, select all (ctrl-A) and copy (ctrl-c).
And paste (ctrl-v).

To get the full text of an HTML message from TheBat email software in preparation for pasting it:

Message -> Save As -> Save as Type - I
Select Unix Mailboxes[*.mbx]
Open the file in your preferred editor, then simply cut and paste.

For The Bat! v1.53bis:
Select the message in question
Click on the "Messages" menu
Select "View Source"

Can you really get free cell phone lookup information?

Posted by Noah Wieder | Saturday, August 04, 2007 | 5 comments »

Why do you suppose so many people are looking for free reverse cell phone look up information? I mean really, there are literally thousands of searches every day on all the various search engines from individuals trying to get free cell phone number reverse lookup information.

I ran some statistics on Google and found that in a typical 24 hour period over 750 people type in the term "free reverse cell phone directory". Ok, I'll clue everyone in to a secret. There is no such thing as a free reverse cell phone directory, none, nada, ziltch. And, if there were, the data would be junk.

The only way to really find an accurate name or address from a cell phone number is to hire a professional. Yeah, there are some web sites like a1peoplesearch.com that offer free reverse phone searches and granted they have some cell phone info (albeit rare).

If you truly need accurate info, and you don't want to spend dozens of hours doing search engine searches until your fingers fall off, or are tired of clicking through dozens of useless links, you'll soon realize there are only a hand full of professional information retrieval services online.

A professional information retrieval service will have a "contact us" page or similar on their web site which includes a contact form or email address as well as a REAL phone number where you can call and speak with someone within a reasonable time period.

There are also dozens of web sites that are link farms or offer low discounted prices and no customer service. Always remember the saying, "you get what you pay for". So when looking for free cell phone lookup searches that saying will definitely ring true.

Going back to my stats from search engines like Google, I thought it would be interesting for people to see just how many people are searching the following phrases in a 24 hour period. It's mind boggling to think this many people need to find out information about cell phone numbers.

This is a list of terms related to cell phone searches phrases performed in Google in August 2007 with the projected number of times the search was requested in a 24 hour period.

As you can clearly see, there are a lot of people looking for free cell phone information. I truly wish there was a way to deliver accurate information for free, it's just not possible.

Here's how cell phone information ends up in private databases that charge industry professionals like private investigators substantial monthly fees as well as transaction fees to access their databases.

Keep in mind, there is not just one private company that obtains cell phone numbers. There are dozens if not hundreds of companies that warehouse and mine data. If you have any type of "club card" and used your cell phone number on your club card, it is likely that those companies sell information to "marketing companies".

Financial institutions sell or share personal information but offer a way to opt-out if you read the fine printed privacy notice.

If you really want to keep your cell phone number private, just remember; never use it, never tell anyone your number, never write it down, never put it on business cards, never use it to order pizza, never give it to any business, etc..

You get the idea, it's pretty much impossible to keep your cell phone number out of these databases. You'd have to change your number often or just never give out your number to anyone.

Thousands of companies are compensated for all personal information they sell, trade, or share somehow. This information doesn't come free, but it's available.

Some of the private data companies will offer free information online, however the databases they typically offer for free are historical or contain older information. Keep in mind that old numbers or outdated information is still viable, but it doesn't really help the majority of people looking for the most current information.

The bottom line is; if you want to get current, accurate, up-to-date cell phone searches, hire a professional.

If you don't hire the "bestpeoplesearch" company, please be sure you are dealing with a legitimate organization that returns emails and phone calls.

Also be sure whoever you hire to conduct your cell phone search requests has a satisfactory Better Business Bureau track record and is a BBB member in good standing.
